What I thought of Desert Crown’s victory in the 2022 Epsom Derby

WOW!

I was at Epsom on Derby Day and witnessed one of the best performances I have ever seen by a 3-year-old. In the build-up to the race, Desert Crown took the preliminaries very well apart from getting a bit hot down at the start before the race. This might have been a slight concern for his backers but overall, he took everything in very well on only his 3rd career start.

The race itself was very interesting tactically as Aiden O’Brien had his 3 runners positioned 1st,3rd and 4th so all up on the pace. Desert Crown sat in midfield and travelled very well throughout the race and was pretty much the last horse to come off the bridle and asked to quicken up the straight. He put the race to bed immediately and was value for far more than the winning distance suggests.

Looking at the horses in behind, I think a lot of the fancied runners just simply didn’t stay the trip and are probably better over a mile or 1m2f. For example, Stone Age had zero excuses in the race and just didn’t get home. My each way selection Star Of India was very disappointing in the end and no real excuses with him either. The ground seemed to be quite tacky and hard work from the little bit of rain they had and some horses may not have gone in it but that is being picky and the best horse won and he was the best by a long way!

The obvious target for Desert Crown has to be the L’Arc de Triomphe now at the start of October, where he is now 3/1 favourite. I think this is terrific value as if he turns up on the day, I imagine him being more like 7/4. He seems to have a very mature mind and attitude for how inexperienced he is and has the temperament to be a superstar. The L’Arc could be a very hot race this year of all these leading contenders turn up as even Emily Upjohn looks very special and she was very unlucky not to win the Oaks on Friday, but she lost out on a head-bob. I am convinced she will get her head back in front next time.

As you guys probably know now if you have been following my tips for a while, I am a big believer that your eyes are your best asset when picking a winner. People can over study the form of races and horses and visually Desert Crown had that wow factor yesterday. So, I don’t need to try and find faults in him by suggesting he didn’t beat much as a 150/1 shot finished 2nd by a couple of lengths. Hence, I will be backing him wherever he turns up next as I don’t see him getting beat at all, he’s the banker of the season now.
